Big Brother 9

By the time you read this Big Brother 9 will have started, along with the annual debate as to whether it is a fascinating insight into the minds of a dozen or so strangers or just a total waste of everyone’s time.

When all is said and done, Big Brother has been around nearly as long as Thatcher was (and we all know what happened to her), so I can’t help but feel that a quiet cremation of the show is in order. Although it has brought us the beautiful Bollywood backside of Shilpa Shetty, it has also foisted on us nightmares such as Jade Goodey.

The show that made staying in the new going out took a nation by surprise and really had us talking back in 2000. It was the sort of programme that had an almost hypnotic, mesmerising quality. The reason why it was so good was the simple format and, probably most importantly, the contestants had no idea that an entire country was talking about them. Although they all knew it was going out on Channel 4, they couldn’t have known the show was about to take off. They probably assumed the show was being aired during the early hours to an audience consisting of dogs with insomnia, disorientated shift workers and those who channel hop in the middle of the night on the lookout for the racy stuff.

The first Big Brother house was very basic. There were no secret second houses and they didn’t parachute a celebrity in partway through to throw the dynamics into a spin and (hopefully) up the ratings. After it’s successful, and not forgetting controversial, first series the Big Brother bandwagon was well and truly on the move. The producers were hungry for ratings and the contestants wanted some of the fame enjoyed by the original housemates. There have been the interminable twists and turns, contestants evicted only to be sent back in and an almost endless supply of extra housemates. Some series have almost lasted to the point of the clocks going back.
In essence, the makers of the programme have tried everything to get back some of the original glory and while there will always be the diehard fans, I think the good people at Endemol and Channel 4 need to face facts. IT’S OVER!!
